Fire on the General Slocum

Note:im kinda running out of famous shipwrecks to blog about so i'll be switching to another topic pretty soon.

On June 15 1904 the paddle steamer General Slocum was carring almost 1500 passengers to Long island,
New York, when she caught fire, resulting in the loss of over a thousand lives. The General Slocum, completed in 1891, had already had a series of mishaps, of which this one was her biggest. There were only an estimated 321 survivors, 1021 people had died. The General Slocum sank but was refloated as a barge, only to sink again in 1911.

Sinking of the Sea Diamond

The Greek owned Cruise ferry MS Sea Diamond ran aground on the island of Santorini on April 5th,2007. I don't quite know why it ran aground but,as in most cases, the officers and crew are probably the ones to blame.Other than this I don't know very much but I do know two people were never found.

A picture of the ship just after she ran aground.

The sinking of the Costa Concordia

The sinking of the Italian owned cruise liner Costa Concordia during the night of January 13 2012 is the most recent cruise ship disaster. At 9:45 local time in the night of January 13th 2012 the Italian cruise liner Costa Concordia was sailing dangerously close to Giglio island off the coast of Italy when she struck a rock. It probably would have been a Titanic scale disaster had the ship not been blown onto a shallow rock ledge. The captain is currently on trail for going so close to the island and for not leaving his ship last(in Italy it's a law that that the captain must be the last one to leave the ship). The ship is currently lying at about a 70 degree angle half submerged in water.

I found a pretty good series of youtube videos on the sinking of the Costa Concordia, hope you enjoy.

The sinking of the Lusitania

The sinking of the British ocean liner RMS Lusitania in 1915 was a devastating tragedy that almost certainly helped bring America into WW1.

On May 1st 1915 the ocean liner RMS Lusitania departed from America on her last voyage.Around 5:00 in the morning on May 7th 1915 the Lusitania was about 120 miles off Ireland.Around 2:00 she was hit by a single torpedo from the German submarine U-20.By 2:30 she was gone, taking with her almost 1200
passengers and crew.

The sinking of the Andrea Doria

The sinking of the Italian passenger liner Andrea Doria is one of the greatest peacetime maritime disasters in history, despite its fairly light loss of life.

Late at night on the 25th of July,1956 the Italian passenger liner Andrea Doria was heading for New York, where it was due the next day.Not knowing that she and the Swedish-American passenger liner MS Stockholm were heading strait toward each other, the two liners were on a collision course. At about 11:10
the two ships collided, instantly killing 51 people. The Andrea Doria slowly sank, while the Stockholm,
despite having her bow ripped off, stayed afloat. But because the Andrea Doria sank so slowly the loss of life was limited to the 51 killed in the collision(46 on the Andrea Doria and 5 on the Stockholm).

The sinking of the Empress of Ireland

The sinking of the Canadian pacific railway liner Empress of Ireland near Quebec city in 1914 was, while not nearly as famous as the sinking of the Titanic,a very large disaster, with the loss of life totaling over a thousand passengers and crew.

On may 28th 1914 the Canadian Pacific Railway liner RMS Empress of Ireland departed from Quebec city and started her last journey up the St Lawrence river and into the Atlantic ocean towards England.
The during the night, while still in the St Lawrence river,a thick fog rolled in.Just before 2:00 in the morning of May 29th,just before the fog rolled in the Empress of Ireland spotted a ship about 8-10 miles away. This turned out to be the Norwegian collier SS Storstad which was heading to Montreal.

What happened next was a series of miscomunications and misinterpretations between the two ships, the mistakes were minor, but they sealed the fate of over a thousand people. Finally, just after 2:00 the Storstad rammed the Empress of Ireland on the starboard(right)side, water rushed into her and she sank in just 15 minutes, taking with her 1012 passengers and crew.
