The sinking of the Andrea Doria

The sinking of the Italian passenger liner Andrea Doria is one of the greatest peacetime maritime disasters in history, despite its fairly light loss of life.

Late at night on the 25th of July,1956 the Italian passenger liner Andrea Doria was heading for New York, where it was due the next day.Not knowing that she and the Swedish-American passenger liner MS Stockholm were heading strait toward each other, the two liners were on a collision course. At about 11:10
the two ships collided, instantly killing 51 people. The Andrea Doria slowly sank, while the Stockholm,
despite having her bow ripped off, stayed afloat. But because the Andrea Doria sank so slowly the loss of life was limited to the 51 killed in the collision(46 on the Andrea Doria and 5 on the Stockholm).
