The Leander class cruisers were built by Britain as light cruisers and completed in the mid 1930s.The eight ships of Leander class was divided into two subclasses, one of five ships of the original design and another of three modified leanders. When WWII started they were given to various owners, some stayed with the Royal navy and some went to the Australian and New Zealand navies. Two of the class participated in the battle of the river plate where after a short but fierce battle they forced the pocket battleship Graf Spee to seek shelter in a neutral South American port where they blockaded her and eventually forced her own crew to scuttle her.
