Sinking of the Laconia

On September 12th 1942 the British ocean liner RMS Laconia was about 130 miles North of Ascension island when she was hit by a single torpedo fired from the German U-boat U-156.However,along with a few hundred passengers and soldiers the ship was carring 1800 Italian prisoners of war and 160 Polish soldiers to guard them. When the ship sank the alot of the passengers and soldiers managed to get to the lifeboats but the Italian POWs had a harder time, alot of them who did not drown were left in the water.

Fortunately the U-156 and several other U-boats arrived. They took the lifeboats in tow but only let Italians on board. Then an American seaplane arrived,U-156 radioed it and told it that it had survivors on board but the plane still started to drop bombs on the submarine. Then the U-156 and the other submarines were ordered to leave the boats and dive for safety. The U-156 had already radioed about the sinking and given the coordinates.
